Adirondack A’s Youth, Model A Ford Restoration Program
The Adirondack A’s has had a continuing Youth, Model A Ford Restoration program. Our club members mentored young people during the restoration of Model A Fords. This was a hands-on program where the young people do every phase of a Model A restoration from rebuilding of the engine, transmission, differential, brakes, steering & body work. During our frame off, total restorations, every piece of the car is totally disassembled, inspected, and if required, parts are repaired or replaced, then reassembled. Our restored Model A’s are like brand new cars. We do add some safety items, like safety glass in the windshields and turn signals to our cars. Jack Byrne Ford in Mechanicville was an instrumental part of the program.
The first restoration was a 1930 Model A Ford Huckster restored by 13 young people, one girl and 12 boys in 2009 / 10.
The second restoration was a 1929 Model A Ford Cedar Strip Boat Tail Speedster, 9 boys were in that program in 2011 /12.
The third program was the restoration of a late 1929 Model A Ford, Flat Bed, AA Truck, 15 were in this program, 3 girls and 12 boys in 2013 / 14. The wood on the bed was replaced with Southern Yellow Pine.
The forth program was a 1931 Model A Roadster, we had 14 young people in this program, 2 girls and 12 boys, plus 2 boys that are in college and come when they could. This was our longest and most difficult program; it ran from October 2015 thru October 2016. This car was an accumulation of parts, of which, many did not belong on this model car. All of the floor pans and sub rails in the car had been damaged and were replaced during the restoration.
The fifth program was a 1930 Model A Roadster, we had 16 young people in this program. 1 girl and 15 boys in 2017 / 18.
The sixth program is a 1931 Model A Sport Coupe started in 2019. Progress on this rebuild was delayed due to the pandemic and it wasn't completed until 2022.
Every project has provided new and different challenges, not only for the youth team, but for the club members as well.
The Adirondack Youth program could not have succeeded without the generous sponsorship of
Jack Byrne, owner of Jack Byrne Ford located in Mechanicville, NY. The dealership has since been sold.
The Adirondack A's Model A Ford Club is currently in the process of evaluating how to proceed with its Youth Program.
